Blink and Guide Dog #3 - College; much appreciation to cane

So after 12 years of blind school, Mayumi & Nikki went to a local junior college. It was their first time to be mainstreamed! Big campus tons of students, etc, etc... Everything was new and overwhelming! Since they were the first blind to attend the college, they were celebrities for a while. However, there were many hardles to clear as well; special accommodation such as notetaker, reader, and books on tape. Braille was often too much to ask.

Nikki was confused with all the changes, but soon started enjoying her college life. She joined the English club and went to a few parties with her new friends; no boyfriend though... She was quiet & shy, not a pretty social battarfly. I guess Being sheltered at the blind school made her somewhat boring and different from other girls... So at the beginning, she really struggled to connect with her peers.

Navigating college campus on her own was another payn in the neck! She kept getting lost and bumping into people. So she finally began using the white cane on campus, and to her surprise, found it cool! She could tell what's coming in front of her, curbs, stairs, etc. And the coolest thing was, people gave her ways and stopped bumping into her! When she did bump into someone, that person said "excuse me!" People didn't look at her like she was an idiot when she couldn't find something right at her nose. Now the cane became her best ally, and she appreciated it more and more every day!
