fearing they may contain mold.

proven to be "above acceptable moisture levels and may contain mold."

If your bag of Wysong dry dog food bears one of the following batch numbers,
do not feed it to your dog:

Wysong Maintenance: lot numbers 090617, 090624, 090706, 090720.
Wysong Senior: lot number 090623

Depending on which type of mold grows on the moist food, the effects can
range from barely noticeable to lethal.
Vomiting and diarrhea are common symptoms, says Lee Herold, a critical-care
veterinarian at DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital

produce a bacteria called Mycotoxin, which can cause life-threatening
seizures or liver failure. Usually, she sees these extreme cases in dogs

The lot number is located in one of two places, depending on if you bought
the food in a bag or a box. On the box, it's easy. A number following the
format in the list above will be on the top of the box. On the bags, it's a
little trickier: hold the bag so that you're looking at the front of it.
Turn it upside down, so you're still looking at the front, but the writing
is upside down now. Now you should see a number imprinted into the crimping
on the bottom of the bag (which is now on top), the company says.

You can return the food to the retailer you bought it from or contact the

Tidbits of Stuff

So, Nikki always acts like she's working so hard, and that's all she does! But that's not true!

She has such a sweet hubby who surprises her with occasional nite-out & trips.

This summer, we went to Vegas to celebrate our friend's birthday. The idea sounded so cool until I found out that it was going to be crazy hot there in July!!! I thought San Diego summer was hot, but no joke! Vegas was burning my paws even at night!!! It wasn't too bad when we were moving, but stopping at the curb was like a torture. I couldn't help dancing around & got a yank on my leash. Boo... What have I done to deserve this??? We tried to stay inside during the day, and went out at night. But it was hot even at night!!! Like one bus driver said, "All you tourists, you pay my bills. But who in the right mind would think about going to the middle of the desert in summer if it wasn't for Las Vegas!" ... Well, we all survived & had a good time! Of all the nice restaurants and buffet, the place Nikki wanted to eat in Vegas was Sonic!!! Cheap date, huh!

San Diego is not the entertainment capital, so-to-speak, but there are tons of stuff for enrichment. We saw two Broadway shows this summer. "Wicked" and the "Lion King" They were both very good shows with lots of music. While people enjoyed the show, I traveled to the Oz and African Savannas in my sleep. zzzzzzz

Who said labs are supposed to love water! You know how I hate water... So all these times I've lived in San Diego, I had never been on the beach; we've walked along the boardwalk, but never on the sand where the chance of getting wet is greater. Well, that was until a few weeks ago. We went to La Jolla Shore with friends. One of them was visiting all the way from Hong Kong! No, it's not the kind of Kong toy! Silly pups! But that's OK; I thought about Kong too when she told us that she was from Hong Kong!!! Anyway, they decided to go closer to the water! I was a bit nervous, but I gave in & went with them. Nikki took off the harness so I could relax & enjoy the beach. We walked along the water line, but the waves were really after us! My paws got wet, and I wasn't real happy about it. While we were on the beach, a lifeguard came up to us and said that the dogs weren't allowed till 6:00pm. But he was cool with me as soon as Nikki told him that I was a guide dog. He even gave me a pat on the head.

Another first was the dog park! Joe & Jake took us to a dog park they go often. WOW so many dogs!!! Little ones, big ones, nice ones, mean ones... we all ran around & had ton of fun! We had to cut it short because some mean dogs started a big fight. I hope we go back to the dog park again some time soon! I hear that there's a cool dog beach in Coronado with fewer mean dogs. That sounds really fun! I wish I could go right now! I'm always working. I need R&R...

I heard that a group of Search & Rescue dogs have been dispatched for the mission of finding a lost princess. Is it true??? Hahaha, just kidding... Over the summer, I was quite busy & had no PC time mainly because my mean lady was always on the computer. Did anyone see her on Facebook and Twitter? Yes, just like million other humans, Nikki is a Facebook addict!

Anyway, I'm finally back in the blogging world! How do you like the new look of the page? I rearranged some stuff & added new links. Hope you like it! The only problem I'm having is, I lost some of the links to your blogs. So let me know if you don't see yours here!

The Old Man and the Dog

"Watch out! You nearly broad sided that car!" My father yelled at me.
"Can't you do anything right?"

Those words hurt worse than blows. I turned my head toward the elderly man in the seat beside me, daring me to challenge him. A lump rose in my throat as I averted my eyes. I wasn't prepared for another battle.

"I saw the car, Dad. Please don't yell at me when I'm driving." My voice was measured and steady, sounding far calmer than I really felt.

Dad glared at me, then turned away and settled back. At home I left Dad in front of the television and went outside to collect my though ts. Dark, heavy clouds hung in the air with a promise of rain. The rumble of distant thunder seemed to echo my inner turmoil.

What could I do about him?

Dad had been a lumberjack in Washington and Oregon . He had enjoyed being outdoors and had reveled in pitting his strength against the forces of nature. He had entered grueling lumberjack competitions, and had placed often. The shelves in his house were filled with trophies that attested to his prowess.

The years marched on relentlessly. The first time he couldn't lift a heavy log, he joked about it; but later that same day I saw him outside alone, straining to lift it. He became irrit able whenever anyone teased him about his advancing age, or when he couldn't do something he had done as a younger man.

Four days after his sixty-seventh birthday, he had a heart attack. An ambulance sped him to the hospital while a paramedic administered CPR to keep blood and oxygen flowing. At the hospital, Dad was rushed into an operating room. He was lucky; he survived.

But something inside Dad died. His zest for life was gone. He obstinately refused to follow doctor's orders. Suggestions and offers of help were turned aside with sarcasm and insults. The number of visitors thinned, then finally stopped altogether. Dad was left alone.

My husband, Dick, and I asked Dad to come live with us on our small farm. We hoped the fresh air and rustic atmosphere would help him adjust. Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. It seemed nothing was satisfactory. He criticized everything I did. I became frustrated and moody. Soon I was taking my pent-up anger out on Dick. We began to bicker and argue. Alarmed, Dick sought out our pastor and explained the situation. The clergyman set up weekly counseling appointments for us. At the close of each session he prayed, asking God to soothe Dad's troubled mind. But the months wore on and God was silent. Something had to be done and it was up to me to do it.

The next day I sat down with the phone book and methodically called each of the mental health clinics listed in the Yellow Pages. I explained my problem to each of t he sympathetic voices that answ ered. In vain. Just when I was giving up hope, one of the voices suddenly exclaimed, "I just read something that might help you! Let me go get the article." I listened as she read. The article described a remarkable study done at a nursing home. All of the patients were under treatment for chronic depression. Yet their attitudes had improved dramatically when they were given responsibility for a dog.

I drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. After I filled out a questionnaire, a uniformed officer led me to the kennels. The odor of disinfectant stung my nostrils as I moved down the row of pens. Each contained five to seven dogs. Long-haired dogs, curly-haired dogs, black dogs, spotted dogs all jumped up, trying to reach me. I studied each one but rejected one after the other for various reasons: too big, too small, too much hair. As I neared the last pen a dog in t he shadows of the far corner struggled to his feet, walked to the front of the run and sat down. It was a pointer, one of the dog world's aristocrats. But this was a caricature of the breed. Years had etched his face and muzzle with shades of gray. His hipbones jutted out in lopsided triangles. But it was his eyes that caught and held my attention. Calm and clear, they beheld me unwaveringly.

I pointed to the dog. "Can you tell me about him?" The officer looked, then shook his head in puzzlement.

"He's a funny one. Appeared out of nowhere and sat in front of the gate. We brought him in, figuring someone would be right down to claim him. That was two weeks ago and we've heard nothing. His time is up tomorrow." He gestured helplessly.

As the words sank in I turned to the man in horror. "You mean you're going to kill him?"

"Ma'am," he said gently, "that's our policy. We don't have room for every unclaimed dog."

I looked at the pointer again The calm brown eyes awaited my decision. "I'll take him," I said.

I drove home with the dog on the front seat beside me. When I reached the house I honked the horn twice. I was helping my prize out of the car when Dad shuffled onto the front porch.

"Ta-da! Look what I got for you, Dad!" I said excitedly.

Dad looked, then wrinkled his face in disgust. "If I had wanted a dog I would have gotten one. And I would have picked out a better specimen than that bag of bones. Keep it! I don't want it" Dad waved his arm scornfully and turned back toward the house.

Anger rose inside me It squeezed together my throat muscles and pounded into my temples.

"You'd better get used to him, Dad. He's staying!" Dad ignored me. "Did you hear me, Dad?" I screamed. At those words Dad whirled angrily, his hands clenched at his sides, his eyes narrowed and blazing with hate.

We stood glaring at each other like duelists, when suddenly the pointer pulled free from my grasp. He wobbled toward my dad and sat down in front of him. Then slowly, carefully, he raised his paw.

Dad's lower jaw trembled as he stared at the uplifted paw. Confusion replaced the anger in his eyes. The pointer waited patiently. Then Dad was on his knees hugging the animal.

It was the beginning of a warm and intimate friendship. Dad named the pointer Cheyenne . Together he and Cheyenne explored the community. They spent long hours walking down dusty lanes. They spent reflective moments on the banks of streams, angling for tasty trout. They even started to attend Sunday services together, Dad sitting in a pew and Cheyenne lying quietly at his feet.

Dad and Cheyenne were inseparable throughout the next three years. Dad's bitterness faded, and he and Cheyenne made many friends. Then late one night I was startled to feel Cheyenne 's cold nose burrowing through our bed covers. He had never before come into our bedroom at night. I woke Dick, put on my robe and ran into my father's room. Dad lay in his bed, his face serene. But his spirit had left quietly sometime during the night.

Two days later my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad's bed. I wrapped his still form in the rag rug he had slept on. As Dick and I buried him near a favorite fishing hole, I silently thanked the dog for the help he had given me in restoring Dad's peace of mind.

The morning of Dad's funeral dawned overcast and dreary. This day looks like the way I feel, I thought, as I walked down the aisle to the pews reserved for family. I was surprised to see the many friends Dad and Cheyenne had made filling the church. The pastor began his eulogy. It was a tribute to both Dad and the dog who had changed his life And then the pastor turned to Hebrews 13:2. "Be not forgetful to entertain strangers."

"I've often thanked God for sending that angel," he said.

For me, the past dropped into place, completing a puzzle that I had not seen before: the sympathetic voice that had just read the right article...

Cheyenne's unexpected appearance at the animal shelter. .his calm acceptance and complete devotion to my father. . and the proximity of their deaths. And suddenly I understood. I knew that God had answered my prayers after all.

Life is too short for drama & petty things, so laugh hard, love truly and forgive quickly.

Live While You Are Alive.
Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity. Forgive now those who made you cry. You might not get a second time.

Banzai, the Star; No Way!

Banzai comes back from the vet/Pet Smart & tells me...

Hey, did you know I have the potential to be the next America's Top Model? Everyone at the vet & Pet Smart thought I was super duper cute, and wanted to pet me. They didn't care if I was jumping or pulling the leash; oh yeah, except for Nikki, but who cares what she thinks... Anyway, people just couldn't get enough of my cuteness!!! One lady even said that my pics should be in a magazine! Yep, she knows...

OK Bro... keep dreamin'! These peeps don't have to deal with your silliness 24/7!

In Trouble & Banzai to the Rescue???

I don't know what made me do it; maybe it was the scent of autumn in the air, or maybe it was the crisp morning air, or was it the annoying fuzzball jumping at my nose? Who knows..., but something excited me a bit too much.

We came back from our morning walk. Nikki decided to go through the entire obedience sequence with me right before we went into our backyard, which I did almost perfectly. Then we came into the backyard. Banzai was barking, jumping around to get our attention. I was doing my best to stay in heal position. But enough is enough! I pulled toward Banzai to go after him, still in harness... "NO" CRAC!, CRAC, CRAC... Oh yeah, of course, a big time correction & puppy push-up followed my misbehavior... Even after we went inside, Nikki wasn't done; she kept me on leash and put me down-stay while she went to get coffee in the kitchen. It was only for 5 minutes, maybe 3 minutes. But it felt like 3 hours to me! I was thursty.

After a sip of coffee, she finally relaxed, and we were again in good term; or so I thought. We were just lounging, and I decided go go outside for fresh air. Then the back door shut on me! Yes, SHUT as in CLOSED!!! I was locked out! How dare she!!!

No one noticed I was at the back door, and I'm not supposed to bark to be noticed, right? It's not fare... Finally after a while, Banzai barked for me, and I am happily on my bed watching TV now. Thanks Bro! Nikki apologized, but I don't think she meant it! Meanness...

Another Story; Happy Ending ,but Sad

They told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie as I looked at him lying in his pen. the shelter was clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly.

I'd only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street. But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog couldn't hurt. Give me someone to talk to.

And I had just seen Reggie's advertisement on the local news. The shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they said the people who had come down to see him just didn't look like "Lab people," whatever that meant. They must've thought I did.

But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of which were brand new tennis balls, his dishes, and a sealed letter from his previous owner. See, Reggie and I didn't really hit it off when we got home. We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was the fact that I was trying to adjust, too. Maybe we were too much alike.

For some reason, his stuff (except for the tennis balls - he wouldn't go anywhere without two stuffed in his mouth) got tossed in with all of my other unpacked boxes. I guess I didn't really think he'd need all his old stuff, that I'd get him new things once he settled in. but it became pretty clear pretty soon that he wasn't going to.

I tried the normal commands the shelter told me he knew, ones like "sit" and "stay" and "come" and "heel," and he'd follow them - when he felt like it. He never really seemed to listen when I called his name - sure, he'd look in my direction after the fourth of fifth time I said it, but then he'd just go back to doing whatever. When I'd ask again, you could almost see him sigh and then grudgingly obey.

This just wasn't going to work. He chewed a couple shoes and some unpacked boxes. I was a little too stern with him and he resented it, I could tell. The friction got so bad that I couldn't wait for the two weeks to be up, and when it was, I was in full-on search mode for my cell phone, amid all of my unpacked stuff. I remembered leaving it on the stack of boxes for the guest room, but I also mumbled, rather cynically, that the "damn dog probably hid it on me."

Finally I found it, but before I could punch up the shelter's number, I also found his pad and other toys from the shelter.. I tossed the pad in Reggie's direction and he snuffed it and wagged, some of the most enthusiasm I'd seen since bringing him home. But then I called, "Hey, Reggie, you like that? Come here and I'll give you a treat." Instead, he sort of glanced in my direction - maybe "glared" is more accurate - and then gave a discontented sigh and flopped down. With his back to me.

Well, that's not going to do it either, I thought. And I punched the shelter phone number. But I hung up when I saw the sealed envelope. I had completely forgotten about that, too. "Okay, Reggie," I said out loud, "let's see if your previous owner has any advice.".........

To Whoever Gets My Dog:

Well, I can't say that I'm happy you're reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggie's new owner.

I'm not even happy writing it. If you're reading this, it means I just got back from my last car ride with my Lab after dropping him off at the shelter. He knew something was different. I have packed up his pad and toys before and set them by the back door before a trip, but this time... it's like he knew something was wrong. And something is wrong... which is why I have to go to try to make it right.

So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond with him and he with you.

First, he loves tennis balls. the more the merrier. Sometimes I think he's part squirrel, the way he hordes them. He usually always has two in his mouth, and he tries to get a third in there. Hasn't done it yet. Doesn't matter where you throw them, he'll bound after it, so be careful - really don't do it by any roads. I made that mistake once, and it almost cost him dearly.

Next, commands. Maybe the shelter staff already told you, but I'll go over them again: Reggie knows the obvious ones - "sit," "stay," "come," "heel." He knows hand signals: "back" to turn around and go back when you put your hand straight up; and "over" if you put your hand out right or left. "Shake" for shaking water off, and "paw" for a high-five. He does "down" when he feels like lying down - I bet you could work on that with him some more. He knows "ball" and "food" and "bone" and "treat" like nobody's business. I trained Reggie with small food treats. Nothing opens his ears like little pieces of hot dog.

Feeding schedule: twice a day, once about seven in the morning, and again at six in the evening. Regular store-bought stuff; the shelter has the brand. He's up on his shots. Call the clinic on 9th Street and update his info with yours; they'll make sure to send you reminders for when he's due. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet. Good luck getting him in the car - I don't know how he knows when it's time to go to the vet, but he knows.

Finally, give him some time. I've never been married, so it's only been Reggie and me for his whole life. He's gone everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in the backseat, and he doesn't bark or complain. He just loves to be around people, and me most especially. Which means that this transition is going to be hard, with him going to live with someone new. And that's why I need to share one more bit of info with you....

His name's not Reggie. I don't know what made me do it, but when I dropped him off at the shelter, I told them his name was Reggie. He's a smart dog, he'll get used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt. but I just couldn't bear to give them his real name. For me to do that, it seemed so final, that handing him over to the shelter was as good as me admitting that I'd never see him again. And if I end up coming back, getting him, and tearing up this letter, it means everything's fine. But if someone else is reading it, well... well it means that his new owner should know his real name. It'll help you bond with him. Who knows, maybe you'll even notice a change in his demeanor if he's been giving you problems.

His real name is Tank. Because that is what I drive. Again, if you're reading this and you're from the area, maybe my name has been on the news. I told the shelter that they couldn't make "Reggie" available for adoption until they received word from my company commander. See, my parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I could've left Tank with... and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq , that they make one phone call the the shelter... in the "event"... to tell them that Tank could be put up for adoption.

Luckily, my colonel is a dog guy, too, and he knew where my platoon was headed. He said he'd do it personally. And if you're reading this, then he made good on his word.

Well, this letter is getting to downright depressing, even though, frankly, I'm just writing it for my dog. I couldn't imagine if I was writing it for a wife and kids and family. but still, Tank has been my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my family. And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family and that he will adjust and come to love you the same way he loved me. That unconditional love from a dog is what I took with me to Iraq as an inspiration to do something selfless, to protect innocent people from those who would do terrible things... and to keep those terrible people from coming over here. If I had to give up Tank in order to do it, I am glad to have done so. He was my example of service and of love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades.

All right, that's enough. I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter. I don't think I'll say another good-bye to Tank, though. I cried too much the first time. Maybe I'll peek in on him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth.

Good luck with Tank. Give him a good home, and give him an extra kiss goodnight - every night - from me.

I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. Sure I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even new people like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and posthumously earning the Silver Star when he gave his life to save three buddies. Flags had been at half-mast all summer.

I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog.

"Hey, Tank," I said quietly. The dog's head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright. "C'mere boy." He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadn't heard in months.

"Tank," I whispered. His tail swished. I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment just seemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my face into his scruff and hugged him.

"It's me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me." Tank reached up and licked my cheek.

"So whatdaya say we play some ball? His ears perked again. "Yeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?" Tank tore from my hands and disappeared in the next room.

And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth.

NEW YORK -- Like any other golden retriever seeking a treat, Tuesday nudged his owner's hand with his snout one recent morning and waited expectantly.

Luis Carlos Montalvan got up from a chair in his small Brooklyn apartment and walked to the kitchen. Tuesday followed close behind, eyes fixed on a white cabinet. The retriever sat alertly as Mr. Montalvan, an Iraq war veteran with severe post-traumatic stress disorder, reached for a vial of pills, lined a half-dozen on the table and took them one by one.

The dog had gotten what he wanted: When the last pill was swallowed, he got up and followed his master out of the kitchen, tail wagging.

Tuesday is a so-called psychiatric-service dog, a new generation of animals trained to help people whose suffering is not physical, but emotional. They are, effectively, Seeing Eye dogs for the mind.

Tuesday is with Mr. Montalvan at all hours. Taught to recognize changes in a person's breathing, perspiration or scent that can indicate an imminent panic attack, Tuesday can keep Mr. Montalvan buffered from crowds or deliver a calming nuzzle. Other dogs, typically golden retrievers, Labradors or Labrador retriever blends, are trained to wake masters from debilitating nightmares and to help patients differentiate between hallucinations and reality by barking if a real person is nearby.

"Tuesday is just extraordinarily empathetic,"
said Mr. Montalvan, 36 years old, a retired Army captain who received a Purple Heart for wounds he suffered in Iraq. "In bad moments, he'll lay his head on my leg, and it'll be like he's saying, 'You're OK. You're not alone.'"

Seeing Eye dogs were first systematically trained in Germany during World War I to aid blinded veterans. Today, psychiatric-service dogs are being trained to help veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan battles.

The federal government has given the dogs the same legal protections as other service animals, so Tuesday can ride the subway with Mr. Montalvan and accompany him to restaurants and theaters. But few of the dogs are available to former troops like Mr. Montalvan, one of the estimated 300,000 veterans of the two wars who will ultimately develop PTSD.

When Luis Montalvan was an Army Captain stationed in Iraq, he suffered serious injuries in an ambush. Back in the States, he's finding comfort from a service dog that tends to his injuries, both physical and emotional.

Puppies Behind Bars Inc., a New York-based nonprofit that uses prisoners to train animals, has placed psychiatric-service dogs with 11 veterans and hopes to provide 14 more this year.
Gloria Gilbert Stoga, the charity's president, said it is difficult to raise the $26,000 needed to train each dog. "We're just scratching the surface,"
she said.

Tuesday was born on the upstate New York farm of Lu Picard, who runs East Coast Assistance Dogs Inc., a nonprofit that trains dogs to assist masters ranging from mentally handicapped children to stroke victims and quadriplegics.

Tuesday was eight weeks old when he and five siblings were turned over to Puppies Behind Bars, who moved them to New York's Fishkill Correctional Facility. The pup shared a cell with John Pucci, a convicted killer who assumed primary responsibility for molding Tuesday into a service dog.

"No one thought he would make it," said Mr. Pucci, explaining that Tuesday would fall asleep in other prisoners' laps as they watched television and would sometimes hide under Mr. Pucci's bed and refuse to leave the cell. Inmates bet Mr. Pucci some cigarettes that Tuesday was too affectionate to be a service dog.

Mr. Pucci discovered that Tuesday loved the jail's small inflatable pool and would run through commands perfectly if he was in the water. In nine months, Mr. Pucci taught Tuesday to respond to 82 commands geared mainly toward helping the physically disabled -- turning on lights with his nose, retrieving food from shelves, helping load washing machines.

"I got released before I could collect the cigarettes," said Mr. Pucci, 64 years old, who served 29 years and now lives in San Antonio, Texas, where he continues to train dogs.

Tuesday returned to Ms. Picard's farm, where his skills were fine-tuned for another 18 months. Ms. Picard taught him to respond to signs of anxiety and commands tailored to veterans with PTSD: "block," which tells the dog to create space for an owner who fears crowds,
"my lap" and "snuggle."

Mr. Montalvan grew up in Potomac, Md., a wealthy suburb of Washington, where he played war games with friends. He enlisted at 17, spent a decade in the Army and enrolled in college to pursue a career as an officer.

In the summer of 2003, newly commissioned as a second lieutenant, he left for Iraq. Photos from the time show a square-jawed man with bulging muscles. Comrades jokingly called him the "Terminator."

That changed in December 2003. Mr. Montalvan was walking in a compound on Iraq's border with Syria at around 9:30 p.m. when a man leaped out of the darkness and started slashing at him with a knife.

He pulled out his Beretta and shot the man, wounding him. Another soldier killed the attacker, according to Army records and several soldiers who served in the unit. Mr. Montalvan was thrown into a truck, fracturing three vertebrae.

Tall with long hair and broad shoulders, Mr. Montalvan now walks with a cane. But his biggest problems, he says, are emotional. "Sometimes my mind goes jumbled," he said one afternoon as he struggled to remember which subway line to take home. "Everything just gets kind of cloudy."

His marriage fell apart in late 2005. He left the Army two years later and severed many friendships. He began to fear crowds and drink himself to sleep. He regularly considered suicide, he says. A local Veterans Affairs medical facility has prescribed painkillers for his back, migraine pills for brain injury, and drugs for anxiety and depression.

By last summer, Mr. Montalvan was living alone in a small apartment in Brooklyn. He was surfing the Web in July when he saw a mass email about free trained service dogs for veterans with physical or psychological wounds -- the "Dog Tags" program of Puppies Behind Bars.

He submitted a formal application. By early November, he joined a group of veterans at Ms.
Picard's farm in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., for two weeks of training with their new dogs.

Mr. Montalvan says he initially didn't feel much of a connection to Tuesday. The dog licked other people's faces, but not his. For the first four months they lived together in Brooklyn, Tuesday was obedient but not particularly affectionate.

"I guess it just took us a while to adjust to each other," he says. They did. Tuesday, now 3 years old, listens to the daily alarm on Mr. Montalvan's wristwatch, his cue to make sure he takes his pills. Wearing the red harness of a work dog, he accompanies Mr. Montalvan to Dunkin' Donuts and the movie theater, to Veterans Administration group counseling sessions in Manhattan, and to Columbia University, where Mr. Montalvan is studying journalism and communication.

At Mr. Montalvan's apartment -- decorated with his Purple Heart and Bronze Star certificates, and pictures and paintings of Tuesday -- they sleep in the same wooden sleigh bed.

On a recent afternoon, Mr. Montalvan and Tuesday walked to a nearby subway station. The platform was crowded. Mr. Montalvan began to look agitated. Tuesday, who had been lying at his feet, jumped up and stood between his master and the nearest cluster of people, creating a buffer. Mr. Montalvan's breathing noticeably stabilized.

The train approached. Mr. Montalvan bent down to tie his Army combat boots, scratched Tuesday behind the ears, and they made their way aboard.

Happy Summer to You!!!

Up to Mother's Day, I was very good at posting on holidays at least! But I realize that I didn't acknowledge Father's Day or 4th of July!!! No offense to dad or America here!!! I love all dads in my life, and USA too!
Anyway, as I finally found the chance to invade the keyboard, I'm catching up on my long neglected blog! Hope I haven't lost too many friends here...

This is my 2nd summer here in San Diego. The weather so far has been pretty generous on my paws, but hot ones are on the horizon, I can tell! We're all doing fine in my family. Greg has been staying out of hospital; better yet, his blood disorder is almost gone, and he's started sailing again! He won the first place at the race on San Diego Bay a few weeks ago! Go Greg!!! Greg is cooking a lot too! He's a very good chef! Lucky Nikki! I just wish he'd make some doggie cookies every now & then; or just drop some scraps for me & Banzai. That's not too hard to do, is it?
The crackhead pup, Banzai is, well what can I say, ... he's being Banzai!!! In his lil world, he's the center of the universe! But believe or not, I've become to like him! We enjoy keepaways in the backyard. And my Meanness, oh I mean Nikki, she's doing OK. Things are not so rosy at the job-front. So she's sorta stressed out every day, but all & all she's still working. That's important 'coz someone has to make money to buy kibbles!

We spent our 4th of July with Greg's family. In Fontana, we can still legally light our own fireworks! So they decided to make their own booms & bangs at the front yard!!! I stayed in the house on tiedown. I protested first, but as soon as I heard those noises, I didn't mind staying in too much.

Greg & Nikki were quite bummed when they canceled their Hawaii trip this summer. But instead, they have 3 trips planned out in the near future; Vegas in a few weeks, Miami for Halloween time, then Vegas again for holidays! Looks like I get to go to all 3! YAY!!! We are all looking forward to those little trips.

Well, that's pretty much the tidbits of my life. I promise I'll update more often. So stay tuned!

When in Doubt, WIAT!!!

When we travel a busy city street with many busy intersections, Nikki and I work as a team. My main job is to avoid obstacles like trash can, outside seating area of restaurants, store signs & merchandise, and other pedestrians; then stop at the curb for further directions. Nikki has to know where we're going, of course! She also needs to listen for traffic to figure out when to cross safely. Sorry to disappoint some of you, but we guide dogs cannot read street signs, nor traffic light! That's giving us too much credit & too much responsibility! But what guide dogs are train to do is to disobey the command when it's unsafe to execute. This is the famous Intelligent Disobedience.

We do this every day, and we're getting better at it as a team. But when we get to the curb towards the end of a green light, Nikki misjudges the traffic & gives me the "forward" command. Of course she's often in a hurry... Sometimes, I save the situation with my intelligent disobedience, but other times, we step into the street because it does sound safe. Then the light changes when we're right at the middle of the crosswalk; cars coming towards us.... YES, heart attack moment! So far, we've managed to get to the other side safely. But I tell ya; When in doubt, WAIT!!!

Abilities Expo Weekend

Hopefully this weekend will be the lazy one. I deserve just being a dog for 1 weekend after working almost nonstop for the past weeks! OK, that's stretching, Nikki says; but we were pretty busy...

The last weekend of May, we went to Anaheim for the Abilities Expo So-Cal. Nikki's job had a booth, so she had to work. That means I had to! NO CHOICE! Who signed me up for this??? Anyway, we took a train up to Anaheim on Friday afternoon. Piece of cake! I like the train ride. It's so smooth and spacious compared to trolleys. After getting off, I got us lost in a huge parking lot with almost no car!!! Nikki heard a radio playing and headed towards the direction. We finally found someone, who happened to be a firework man! He told us that the parking lot was empty because they were setting up fireworks for Angels Stadium that evening. After some more wandering around, we found a bus stop and went to the Convention Center to join Wes & Joe, and Jake of course!

The convention center was very crowded with lots of wheelchairs and service dogs! I had a hard time not to lose focus. I know it's bad, but sometimes, eye candies are so tempting!!! And sometimes, I was focus, but other dogs came to say hi. It's rude to totally ignore them, right??? We got to the registration table no problem, but had a hard time finding Nikki's booth. Rows & rows of accessible cars & state-of-the-are wheelchairs, tables with venders, people stopping at the tables, power chair suddenly backing up towards us to see something... I was so happy when I saw my office buddy Jake! That was our booth! Have to admit that we didn't really get down the best way to get to our booth until the last day of the Expo. Every time we left by ourselves, we got lost a bit! But I always managed to get us back to the booth.

After the show closed at 4:00pm, we went to the hotel next door and checked in. The front desk manager showed us our room all the way from the front desk, which was very nice of him! We were on the 6th floor. I learned our room right away! When we got to the room, the manager gave Nikki a brief orientation of where things are. Then Nikki asked him to put a strip of tape on her key card so she would figure out tactility which direction she should insert the card to open the door. The manager was pretty intrigued with the simple way to adopt to blindness. Yay for little education! The hotel room was as big as our living room, and I got to have some relaxation on the bed!!! That was until Nikki chased me down onto the floor so she can hog the bed all to herself!!!

Saturday & Sunday were all work during the day. Most of the time, people didn't even notice me because I was neatly under the table. But after finding out that Jake was getting all the attention and love, I decided to come out a little bit and played a role of the booth mascot! Jake & I were the peep magnets! Win for everyone!

Saturday evening when we got back to the hotel, we were both tired. After a short play session, Nikki just passed out on the bed with her shoes on and all! So I took a nap too, dreaming of kibble shower & prince charming... Then around 9:00pm, we decided to go to Downtown Disney with Joe & Jake just for fun, and maybe something to eat because humans hadn't eaten. It was a very nice walk from the hotel. I managed the jam-packed Downtown Disney like a champ! I'm pleased to say that Joe was impressed, and even Nikki was quite thankful for my awesome guide work!

Sunday after the whole event was done & we loaded up the cars with leftover stuff, Steve offered us a ride all the way to San Diego! WooHoo! It was absolutely nice not having to take a train back after a long day of work!

Busy or Not, That is the Question

Although there are exceptions here & there, I pretty much know our routine during the week. Get up, eat, go to work, play with Jake if he's at the office, snooze under the desk, etc. etc...

But the devil is on weekends when Nikki's off work. I never find out what a particular weekend is going to be like! Some days, she doesn't do anything but lay around, eat, watch TV, and mess on the computer; yet other days, she's all over the place! She's the most unpredictable woman I've ever seen!

Last weekend of all work, but it was lots of fun! I'll tell you guys more later. The weekend before was made up with house chores & laziness. And one before that, we went to Ocean Beach with Allison & walked on the pier and saw pretty garden. Allison even let me jump on her couch in her apartment! Now I loved that!!!

I like both relaxing and busy weekends as long as they take turns; you know what I mean???

Night & Day

Hi everyone,

Hope you guys are doing well & enjoying whatever life brings to your way!

Can you believe it? It's been almost a year and a half since I started working as a guide dog in San Diego!!! I think I could run around downtown San Diego like a champ with my eyes closed! Oops, Nikki's giving a "That's Enough" look!!!

There is a rout that we've been walking almost every day since my day 1 as a guide. It's a short rout from Nikki's office building to the nearby post office. Not a hard rout at all despite a major intersection. Actually, I like crossing Broadway & 2nd because I know a kibble is coming at the curb! Weird street layout? I've got it down; no prob!!!

Then what is so significant about this rout? Well, it's full of surprises, and you never know what/who we encounter every day! Since it's usually around lunch time, the street is crowded. There are people sitting at the outside cafe, playing music at the curb or just pan-handling, and of course my favorite, yummy stuff on the ground & people walking their dogs!!! I'm usually good at ignoring all these distraction and focus on the task at hand, but sometimes, temptations are much greater!!! Nikki thinks my guide work can be night & day.

Oops, Access Issue!!!

Yesterday evening, we went to this tiny Thai restaurant with friends. It was a new restaurant that opened up not too long ago.

When we enter the place, a guy came up to us and said, "Sorry, no dog allowed." Nikki and her friends tried to explain what a guide dog is, and it is against law to deny access to a service dog. But the guy wasn't taking it well. Then other customers took our side! They started saying, "Yeah, you have to let them in. You will get in trouble." etc, etc. So the restaurant guy finally gave in & seated us at the table by the door. After that, it was business as usual. I was under the table snoozing while humans enjoyed their dinner & chat.

I'm glad that everything worked out quickly and in our favor. Yay for the customers sticking up for us! It seems that we have more problems at Asian-owned establishments. I know there's a lot to do with culture. It's improved tremendously, but there are still more access issues for guide dogs and their handlers in Japan.

Long, Long time no see everyone!

The weather in SD is very strange. It was super duper hot last weekend & early this week. Usually my house is not that hot even in summer because it's close to the water. However last Sunday, it was wapping 91 degrees!!! I was like "Leave me alone!!!"
But the heat has left as quickly as it came! Now it's my kind of weather. I'm so happy to feel the pleasant spring in the air!

My 3rd Birthday

On my birthday morning, I woke up in my big cozy princess bed, surrounded by stuffed toys, squeaky toy, and lots of yummy treats! Then kibbles, oh the endless shower of kibbles, apple slices, and .....

Then I was awakened by a familiar noise; yes, that familiar sound; Greg snoring, Banzai whining & Nikki stretching not wanting to get up. I was no longer on a princess bed, and all the treats & toys were gone! Then comes the familiar sound of kibbles hitting my bowl! Yes, there's still a hope of endless kibbles with lots of yummy topping! It's my birthday after all. In human, I'm supposed to be 21. I deserve more rights!!!

To my dismay, I only got a cup of usual breakfast, and of top of that, I had to work on my b-day! Nikki & Greg have started house-hunting. So we were loaded in our friend's car and went to look at places in different neighborhoods in San Diego. Hope they get a nice house with backyard again so Banzai & I can play. But Nikki doesn't want a huge backyard because she's just lazy... She's supposed to be a farmer's daughter, but yard work and home maintenance/improvement are all Greek to her! What's up with that!

Then in the evening, Nikki & I went to Old Town to meet up with Becky & Cricket and her family & friend. We had never met each other, but we have been blogging buddies! So when Becky came to San Diego for conference, they decided to finally meet in person! Cricket is slightly bigger and maybe wiser than me, but we look very much alike! Maybe we're half or quarter sisters??? We all went to Cafe Coyote for dinner. It was very crowded! Cricket and I showed off an excellent guide work, if I must say myself, in the crowd! I even picked up my speed and showed off how well I knew San Diego! Well, at some point, I was walking too fast because Nikki kept telling me "steady," which is a command for slow down.

All & all, I had a good birthday! I wish Cricket lived closer so we could play together often.

Happy Spring to Everyone!

I haven't had much chance to blog these days because Nikki has been hogging the computer all to herself... How can she stay on the computer that long is out of my comprehension!

Anyway, there's not much happening here since Vegas trip. I'm still working every day, dragging Nikki from & to the office. It's so hard not to sniff these days because the fresh scent of spring is in the air! Yes, I get in trouble for sniffing around too much, but I'll tell ya; STOP & SMELL THE ROSE EVERY NOW & THEN! You will feel a lot better & not so stressed out about soon-to-come paycut...

Oh, thanks so much to those of you who voted on my poll. I was looking forward to going to Hawaii this summer! But I don't think anyone's going anymore. $$ is too tight, I guess. I'm glad that I'm not human. They think that they rule the world and everything in it. But think about it! The green rules human life, at least in America!

Patience is Virtue

I like the Daylight Saving Time. It's not dark anymore when we go home, and we can even squeeze in some playtime in the backyard in the evening! But Nikki, my laziness doesn't seem to get this "Spring Forward" very well. She's always late feeding us!!! Just because she can't get used to loosing an hour doesn't mean I have to starve...
Patience is virtue??? Who said such a thing??? I don't get any extra for waiting patiently...

Quiet Car

The topic for the last CCB meeting was quiet cars and blind/VI pedestrians. The Guide Dogs of the Desert brought a popular Toyota Prius for demo. Usually the meeting is small, but last one was very well attended. People discussed possible legislations and other solutions to prevent accidents involving blind/VI and quiet cars.

So what's wrong with those popular hybrid cars? They are quiet, fuel-efficient, and good for the environment. Many companies and government agencies give incentives for "Going Green."
The problem is its quietness! When they travel, blind/VI people use the traffic noise to determine if it's safe to cross the street. Traffic noise is a good marker for their orientation too. Blind people learn a great deal to listen for traffic in order to travel independently & safely. Yes, a white cane and/or a guide dog are their mobility aids, but the final call is on the blind individuals. However, with hybrid car being so smooth and quiet, a blind person wouldn't know that car is right there until it's too late!

After the meeting, there was a demo so people can experience it. Nikki & I saw the Prius passing back & forth right in front of us. We didn't hear a thing when it zoomed right by us!!! They say that cane users are more at risk than guide dog users when it comes to quiet cars because the dogs can see the car coming and engage in the fabulous Intelligent Disobedience. That means more stressful work cut out for us guide dogs!!!

We live in the city, and cars are everywhere along with bikers & skate boarders and stuff on the sidewalk! You just don't know what I'm dealing with when I'm wearing harness!!!

American Idle Party

Anyway, here goes my random update.

Every week on American Idle night, Greg & Nikki host the viewing party at our house! Of course, we dogs don't get to have the food Greg prepares for humans, but while they eat & cheer their favorite contestants, dogs get to have a backyard party of our own! It's usually Lisa's 2 dogs, Brownie, Banzai & me. I'm so happy to be able to run around with Ruben & Gus! They are big dogs like me, but the loudest of all is still, ... Yes I don't have to mention, do I! BANZAI!!! Watch out bro, Greg is seriously talking about getting a bark collar for you!
If you're contemplating a caper, it is the best to pull it off during the American Idle! No one's watching us or listening for our movement. So I quickly & smoothly approached Banzai's bowl, still full of his dinner, and YES, ... I don't have to spell it out, right? It was supposed to be a very quiet success without even being noticed! However, the stupid bowl let out a little ding! Well, but I did it!!! It wasn't a big prize, but good practice... Shhhhhh...

On the Idle front, the blind guy is still in! His voice is pretty good. But he's not Nikki's favorite. It is so funny that some people think all blind people know one another. Nikki was asked a few times on the bus if she's met Scott:D

What Happened in Vegas (Long)

Who said you can't enjoy Vegas without gambling? We had a wonderful time even though Nikki & Greg didn't go anywhere near the slot machines or a blackjack table!

When we got to Las Vegas last Friday, it was threatening to rain. We took a cab to our hotel and checked into our room. Wow nice! There was a jacuzzi in the room! Humans would love that! After unpacking and relaxing, Nikki and I decided to explore the hotel. We had to find a good place for my business too! So we ventured out to the courtyard. It was like a forest with small trails! We found the grass patch and took care of the biz part quickly. Then I got us lost in the woods! I was just so excited about this new place and forgot that I still had a blind person at the end of my harness... I was following my nose along the trail! I remembered to stop at the curbs and stairs, so Nikki didn't fall or anything. But to tell you the truth, I wasn't guiding her; I was guided by my nose and curiosity!!! We passed through all kinds of interesting smells! Nikki was getting frustrated, but I could care less! When we finally ended up in front of the shop/casino part of the hotel, Nikki found a security who gave us the direction to the timeshare part of the hotel and got us back on track. Oh yes, you better believe that I was reminded of my job!!!

This is Vegas! Daily routine goes out the door! Humans decided to go out for dinner around 9pm. The strip was bright and full of people! Now I really had to work hard so Nikki wouldn't bump into anything!!! At the restaurant, there were 2 very tall funny-looking people! They were about to begin the show. Though we couldn't see their show, we took pictures with them. I'll post some time soon.

Saturday started late and relaxing. Our friends who live in Vegas came to visit. So we enjoyed pizza and movie with them in our room. Our initial plan was to go to the heated pool, but it was too chlly for that!
After our friends left, Nikki and Greg got ready for the show for the evening. Greg left first to get the tickets, and we were to meet him at the Hard Rock Hotel later. Wow! We were on our own!!! To make things more challenging, there were two Hard Rocks! Thanks to the cell phone and helpful people (and my great guide work) we found the right place just in time for the show. It was a Motown music show. Nikki and Greg liked the music even though the food sucked... I offered to taste the food at the buffet line, but immediately turned down...

Sunday, we browsed around the Verragio. Its famous garden was decorated Asian style for the Chinese New Year. It was amazingly beautiful! Being a photographer, Greg took tons of pictures. So many nice stuff at the mall!!! Nikki tried on a $55,000 Lorex!!! Hey lady, cut it out! That's more than what you make in a year! She can only dream... Then she went to Tiffany's and tried on the heart pendant, earrings, on & on & on.... Lady, Cut It Out!!! Oh, then we went to this French bakery that was on TV. Their cake was more like art! Nikki got one with raspberry and rose petals. I'd say it's too pretty to eat, but she ate it anyway for breakfast next day.
In the afternoon, we went to our friends' house and hanged out before going back to the hotel. They had a cat, but I couldn't play with him because for some reason, he was scared of me. So Nikki kept me in harness to assure my best behavior.

Time flies when you're having fun. Monday was the day we headed home. Needless to say, Nikki and Greg had a wondrful Valentine's weekend. My highlight of this Vegas trip; I got to go on the escalators many times! YES, I love them!!! AND, I was allowed on the bed a little bit! Shhh, don't tell the hotel house keeping!

Seeing Eye Dog from the Guide Dogs for the Blind???

Our flight to & from Las Vegas was short and sweet even though it was a little bumpy and very crowded! Since we couldn't get a bulkhead seat, I was crammed in a super tight space under the seat with Nikki's purse, Greg's jacket, and other human belongings!!! I slept through most of the ride. after all, it was just like elevator and bus ride with a little jolts here and there. Kind of fun, huh!!! Nikki has to really appreciate the fact that I'm a small and easy going girl!

Thanks to the GDB training, I had no problem with the airport security check point. When they patted me down, I thought they were ready to play with me, so I got a bit too excited. That was the only thing that prevented me from being perfect! People kept pointing at me and said "Look, Seeing Eye dog!" Even the security and flight attendants kept calling me a Seeing Eye dog! But Nikki didn't say anything. Wait a minute! Am I not a proud guide dog from GDB??? Oh, I get it; Seeing Eye has become a name that refers to guide dogs in general, just like Kleenex for all tissues.

I know I've become a slacking blogger, but there hasn't been much around here... Nothing exciting anyway.

Looks like many of the blogging puppies have started new lives either as a guide or otherwise. Congrats & good luck on whatever you guys decided to do!

Only a couple of weeks ago, we were having a record breaking hot days in San Diego! Then rain came; then a cold winter!!! I know San Diegans are spoiled when it comes to rainy cold weather, but let me say it. It's soggy and cold these days!!! It rained off & on this past weekend, and now we're in between rains if the weatherman's right! I like the fresh crisp air after the rain. It feels so good! I'd love to stop and smell the roses, but Nikki wouldn't let me:> I often get in trouble for sniffing too much. Nikki thinks that I'm too distracted lately, and Gentle Leader is on the horizon!!! Guys, stop talking about GL in your blog; Nikki is getting ideas...

This weekend, we're going to Vegas, and I'm flying for the first time as a guide dog!!! Any advice from those frequent flyers???

Superbowl (Doggie) Party

Last Sunday's Superbowl party was a lot of fun! Friends filled up our little living room and the backyard and enjoyed the game and, of course, Chef Greg's food! Since San Diego wasn't in the game, no need to worry about a heart attack! Most people were rooting for Cardinals because they were underdogs! Nikki was feeling the same way, but she was cheering for Pittsburgh to win the bet with her coworker! SHE WON $10 LUNCH!!!

But the highlight for me was the kids and dogs that came to the party!!! There were 4 kids and 5 dogs all together! 3 of us big dogs and 2 small dogs. We all got along and played fetch and tag together most of the time. Maybe you guessed it; Banzai was the loudest of all, and he was the only one who got in trouble and locked up a few times during the party! He had a nerve to get on the food table, that bugger!!! I liked Ruben and Goose! I'm not sure which one I should pick as my prince:)

I appreciate total strangers being helpful. But sometimes.....

The other day, we were waiting for a trolley. A guy started talking to me; you know the usual "Oh puppy, I know you're working, but...." Nikki doesn't mind others petting me when we are waiting for a bus as long as they ask her first. However, this guy just started feeling me up! Yeah, of course, my tail went off 100mph! So Nikki & the guy sort of started talking about guide dog team and how we work and stuff. Then the train came. The guy said that was the Blue line, which was ours. OK, thanks!

Nikki grabbed my harness and we were off towards the train door, right? No, the guy was in my way on the narrow platform! He was asking Nikki which car she wanted to get on. She tried to tell him that we could manage it just fine! However, the guy wasn't leaving the poor blind lady & the dog alone!!! He kept getting right in front of us!!! Meanwhile, the train took off, and we had to wait for another 15 minutes... The guy was again trying to engage in a chat with Nikki, but she was quite annoyed with him. So she picked up her cell phone and pretended that she was on the phone.

Yesterday we were at the Social Security office. Nikki wanted to get there before they close at 4pm sharp, and we made it at 3:51!

While we were waiting for out turn, some more last-minute people rushed in to beat the closing time. Then, there was a commotion at the door! The security guard was shoeing a lady off telling her the office was closed. The lady was upset because it was not 4:00 yet, and she should be allowed inside! But the guard rudely said, "Too bad! It's closed because I said so!" and locked the door!!! Nikki pressed her talking watch a few times. It was 3:57. Isn't it an abuse of the power???

On Saturday at Thuy's party, everyone was saying "Happy New Year" to each other! OK, it's still January, but isn't it kind of late for a new year party?

Oh no, Thuy's family is Vietnamese, and they were celebrating Chinese New Year like many Asian countries do. It's a Luna calendar and the new year's day changes every year! I think we used to celebrate Luna New Year in Japan, but not anymore...

Thuy's party was a lot of fun! There are many friends and good food including Thuy's mom's famous Vietnamese eggroll! People pet and played with me a lot, which was the best part! Brownie and I wanted to play, but whenever we got excited, my tail swished cups and other things on the coffee table... So no doggie playtime:> And Guys, I almost succeeded to steal a bite of Tiramisu! I was sitting at Nikki's feet by the coffee table. She had a piece of cake right at my nose! I slowly approached the sweetness... Almost there, ... She's still talking to someone; her head is completely turned around! YES Success!?!? No! Greg discovered my act and told on me! CRACK! CRACK! "Coral, No!" The rest of the party, I was put on down-stay... Boooo.....

Dear Mr. President:

I don't have to even say your last name anymore because Mr. President is YOU finally, Mr. Obama!!!

Yesterday, we watched your inauguration on TV with excitement. Actually, Greg hosted a small breakfast & viewing party at our small house with a few friends. We had 3 TVs on with all different stations broadcasting from DC! I have to tell you; even Banzai was quietly watching TV!!! Unfortunately, Nikki & I had to leave for work before your speech, but we watched it online later.

I liked your speech because it was enthusiastic and to the point without sugarcoating. Mr. President, you have already shown us that anything is possible! When Nikki was dating an African-American guy less than 10 years ago, his entire family thought it impossible for America to accept a black person as the leader of the country. But look what happened yesterday! And how excited but peaceful the crowd was in spite of something like 2 million people of different races and beliefs at one place?!?!

I know that your job ahead is very very difficult, and there is no quick solution for any issue. However, I believe that you will try your hardest to make America a better place for its people, and a good neighbor to other countries.

Oh, one more thing: have you decided on your family dog? AKC named Labrador Retriever the most popular breed in 2008! That's ME!!! Well, I can't be the First Dog because I already have a job here. But just a thought: why don't you adopt one of career-changed dogs from GDB or any service dog schools in that matter!

Yes, this afternoon, Thuy, Brownie, Nikki and I enjoyed the beautiful summer-like San Diego weather and a water-front walk on Shelter Island! I was off harness most of the time and was allowed to be just a dog! There were many other dogs, big & small, but I handled them very well, if I must say so myself!!!

While humans were chatting away, and we dogs were greeting with one another, there were three ducks crossing the street! And actually, cars were slowing down and stopping for them!!! You know these days, cars don't stop for anything! WOW! Ducks Rule!!!

I know I haven't posted for a while... I was just working nonstop for the last 2 weeks, Weekend and weekdays... Can you believe it???

Last weekend (1/10-11) Nikki volunteered at the Challenged America booth at the San Diego Boat Show. Challenged America is a nonprofit organization that teaches kids & adult w/disabilities and whoever's interested how to sail big and small accessible boats. Greg used to work there, and he sailed from CA to HI in the Transpac yacht race in 2003. They are trying to enter the Transpac race again this year. So the booth theame was Aloha! So of course, I was wearing a ray on my harness. Nikki & I, along with Hiro & Tawny (Another guide dog team from GDB) greeted many people. Tawny & I were the peep magnets! People, especially kids came to say hi to us! Who can resist 2 beautiful yellow labs like us:D Because it was a boat show booth, some thought that we were the search & rescue dogs. HaHaHa

Sunday night after the boat show, we met up with Greg, Thuy & Josh and went to see the last performance of Annie at the Civic theater. It was a cute play. The girl who played Annie sounded just like the movie. After the show, I was mobbed by kids everywhere I went. For some reason, they kept calling me Sandy though:) Hmmm, show biz may not be a bad idea! Could it be my 2nd career???

Then Thursday night after work, we went to see Boyz II Men concert at the House of Bruce. It was a small venue with roomful of noisy people!!! Everyone was worried about me and the noise, but of course, I was perfect! I had to stand up a few times and stretch & happy-dance! Hey, I was enjoying the music too!

It's a 3-day weekend, and I'm finally getting some time off! I heard that Thuy & Brownie are coming soon to pick us up! That means doggie playtime??? Hope that's true!

I went to the vet yesterday and got a clean bill of health! Doctor didn't give me a cookie, but instead gave me two shots and heart worm test!!! What's up with that! Where's my cookie?

Now being said that, I have to tell you one thing! Vacuuming & cleaning up the floor/ground are NOT included in your job description!!! You're NOT supposed to pick up ANYTHING on the ground or in the bush no matter how tempting it may be! When relieving, concentrate on your business! When walking, keep your head high like a proud princess! In the kitchen, do not vacuum up whatever's on the floor. FYI, your name is neither Dyson nor Oreck! Remember what the vet told you? You got sick because you had eaten something you weren't supposed to... So from now on, your behavior will have to be dealt with harder correction or worse Gentle Leader!

Dear Nikki,

Well, remember what the vet said? Vacuuming is in the DNA of all labs! So it is quite hard to alter that in spite of my good upbringing and best training at GDB. Doing Better: Can You Please Start kibbling Again?

Thank you so much for your get-well wishes! I'm feeling much better.
I did go to the vet yesterday. They were going to run all kinds of tests on me. But the doc saw me alert and happy, she decided to try out antibiotics first. Yay no torture!!! Of course I had to be alert because my mean lady doesn't give me any sick day, and I was happy because I remembered the big cookie that the doctor gave me at the last visit! However, no cookies this time:> What is worse, the doc told Nikki to feed less to be easy on my tummy; regular food OK, but no treats!!! BOOOO.....

So I started taking meds last night. I still have loose end, and staying low key. But I'm ready to EAT REGULAR KIBBLE! Nikki tried to give me that rice & chiken stuff, which didn't appeal to me very well. So I walked away! Then she gave me a small amount of regular food! YES, I was waiting for this!

I don't get kibble bits on rout yet for some reason... Come on lady, I'm working my butt off for you dispite upset tummy... Hope the magic pill works quickly, and everything goes back to normal.

You know during the holidays, some bugs were attacking the humans in my house! Well now, it got me!!! I've been feeling terrible for a couple of days with tummy problem. I've been put to fast a lot too because of vomit and diarrhea issues... Nikki is pretty disgusted with having to pick up yuckiness!!! Hey that's the part of having a dog! Nikki talked to someone at GDB just now, and sounds like she's taking me to the vet. Wish me luck!

A Little Scary Moment

This afternoon, we were on our way home from Target. We turned the corner and were passing the grassy area behind the store, minding our own business. Then all the sudden there was a dog barking and lunging at us!!! The dog came straight to me! The owner was yelling "No, come back" or some sort, but the dog wasn't listening at all! Nikki dropped the harness handle so I could get away! I was afraid what was going to happen... Seeming like forever, the owner finally got a hold of his dog. Nikki was scared and speechless although she was supposed to say something. I don't remember if the owner apologized or not. But Nikki wanted to leave the scene quickly. So she gave me the forward command, and I resumed the guide work.

Usually I get in trouble for being distracted by other dogs, but this time, I was focused on my task at hand! I don't know if the dog was trying to be friendly or start a fight; unfortunately more likely the latter... I wasn't hurt, but it's not fun to encounter a loose dog while working...

When we got home, we were greeted by Banzai! He came home from his long vacation at Grandma's! We played a little, and I decided to take a nap because I was tired from the dog encounter incident. I'm OK; I am still happy to wear harness and pass the grass area! Hey, it's my frequent potty place. So I even peed there!

Very Sad News

Today I got email telling me that my dear friend, Duchess crossed the rainbow bridge.
She was a veteran guide from Seeing Eye; worked for a very respected and successful blind individual. I am too baby to call Duchess my friend, but I always watched her working with admiration. I hope 10 years from now, I could finish my job with sense of dignity and assured accomplishment.

Here is a part of email with good story:

A difficult morning as it was time to give Dutchess a final loving hug and a last time in her harness. ...

Dutchess was 11 years and 8 months old; worked for a few weeks shy of 10 years, and together we traveled more than 1-million air miles. She was very special.

I feel the following story by a veterinarian says it all.

A Dog's Purpose

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron,his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat to gether for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know Why.' Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life -- like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?'
The six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.
Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:
When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.

Hi Everyone,

I didn't mean to neglect my furry and non-furry friends on New Year's Day, but my sickly human kept hogging the computer... She was trying to clean up the PC because some weird search page kept popping up! Well, that's kind of fixed now, so here I am; finally getting my turn:)

Our new year (2009) came quietly while we were watching TV. Last year, Nikki & Greg threw a party with many friends ringing in the 2008. However, they had to settle for a quiet one this time. I was thankful to be with my small family in a cozy little house; Greg was back home and doing better; Nikki was sick, but not too bad... We were missing Banzai, but we all know that he's safe and having a blast!

On New Year's Day, humans slept in till 8:30 or so. Then we watched the Rose Parade on TV. There was a Lions Club float featuring Helen Keller and her teacher. It was decorated by blind & visually impaired people. I found out later that my blogging buddies, Binny and Astoria were in the parade!!! Now they are the famous celebrities with body guards and poop scoopers????

Nikki took me to the groomer yesterday, and I'm all clean and fluffy for 2009! Banzai is coming home tomorrow, and we are all gearing up for the new year to unfold!

Thank you so much for your thoughts & prayers for Greg! He is doing much better, and as of now, he's coming home tomorrow. YAY!
But I have another sickly moody human to deal with... Nikki has caught a flu, I believe. We didn't go anywhere except for my potty walks yesterday. She kept laying down. I was bored with no one to play with... But what can you do... I was just lounging around. We have lots to do! Hopefully she is feeling good enough to take care of some stuff before Greg comes home. Oh, and Banzai too!

Last night on our way home from Kaiser, we stopped at the Walgreens and got me a new bed! It's round and big, and enough room for me to stretch... Best of all, it's bouncy and doesn't sag like the other ones!

Nikki is feeling a little under the weather today, and we just got the words from Greg that he's not coming home till Monday... boo... So we are just lounging around. I'm loving my new bed!!!

So, what are we gonna do with my old bed? It's still all right to lay on, just not as comfortable... Maybe we'll take it to the animal shelter and share the love with a doggie awaiting for his/her new family. That's Christmas is all about, right Mr. Jeasus???

This Christmas

Hi Furry & Non-furry Friends,

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas with family & friends.

Our Christmas was wet & quiet, but a hectic one because Greg had to spend his Christmas in hospital... Banzai went to Grandma Sue's so Nikki & I could go visit Greg. I was going to ask Santa for a long list of presents for such a good, hard-working girl! However, I decided to scratch all and asked for good health for Greg so he wouldn't have to stay in hospital so much next year!

Greg was taken to the hospital by an anburance on Monday night, or I should say very early Tuesday morning. Although he was admitted right away, he ended up staying in the ER almost all day! They finally transferred him to the room Tuesday evening. At first doctors were considering a surgery on his leg again, they decided on treating with antibiotics... Thank God!!!

On Christmas Eve, we were supposed to go to Greg's family after work. But we headed to Kaiser to keep Greg company. He had a few IV tubes on him, most of which were antibiotics and pain meds. We would have stayed overnight if he had a private room like before. But the room was pretty crowded with a roommate and medical equipment. Whenever nurses came to do something, Nikki & I had to step out of the room! So we left the hospital when the visiting hours were over at 8:00pm. When we got home, I found my new Christmas toy! Santa must have dropped it off while we were gone! On my bed was a soft fuzzy bone-shaped squeaky toy! Nikki & I played with it for a while before we went to bed. I made sure that I don't rip my new toy so Nikki wouldn't take it away.

Christmas morning came quietly; no excitement of opening gifts with family... Just Nikki & me at home... not even Banzai... And she decided to wait to open her presents till Greg comes home. After playing with me, Nikki did some human stuff, and we were off to see Greg.
Since I was sitting by the door, I took responsibility of a receptionest/greeter of the room and loved the job! People came to say hi and I got lots & lots of petting and belly rub! I gave them nice licks and boddy wiggles in return! No worries; I was off harness. After a while, my job slowed down, and I was taking a little nap. Then, surprise surprise... Greg's mom, Selena, Jeremy, Sophia & Joseph came with presents!!! How nice of them! That brightened up the day! Greg & Nikki could open their gifts on Christmas day! Nikki got a cozy bath robe and blankey, and a perfume! Any doggie cookies for me???
Nikki & I went back to our house with Greg's family so we could give them the gifts. Well, Santa wasn't ready for this. So Nikki had to scramble and wrap up all the gifts! Good thing that they had done all the shopping! They dropped us off at the hospital on the way back to Fontana for their Christmas dinner, which Dad has been preparing! Yummm, can I go with you guys??? Nikki knows how to use a cane!

After they left, Nikki gave me a surprise! A cookie for me! Nikki said that it was from my Prince Zane!!! Wow! Thank You my Prince!

Greg is doing much better, according to doctors. Hopefully he will be able to come home by Saturday.

Nightmare Monday

Right before Christmas, it was all festive around here. However it turned gloomy just like San Diego weather...

Late last night, Greg became violently sick! It started with shivering chill then high fever. His blood pressure was low! At first, we thought NyQuil will do it, so he took it and try to sleep it off. But when he woke up couple hours later, it got worse... So we decided to call 911!

They took him around 2:00am. We stayed home this time. Greg should have seen a doctor by now, but no news from the hospital!!! We are hoping it is just a bad case of flu & nothing more! Nikki was a little sick over the weekend. Maybe she gave it to him... Send your thoughts & prayers for him, please!!!!

Night Before Christmas (Author Unknown)

'Twas the night before Christmas and the kennels were still,
with most dogs now asleep having eaten their fill.
The Labradors sprawled out, quite snug in their beds,
while visions of ANYTHING edible danced in their heads.
And the Goldens and Shepherds curled up on the floor,
some twitched in their sleep and some even did snore.
The dog food was stacked in the feed room with care,
in hopes that a trainer soon would be there.
On the window ledge, one of the kennel cats lay,
surveying the lawn at the end of this day.
Something was different, that little cat knew.
Tonight something would happen, it had to be true.
For that day as the workers had left to go home,
They'd wished Merry Christmas! before starting to roam.
The dogs had noticed it too during this past week's walks,
the trainers seemed just that much happier and eager to talk.
In the mall where they worked through the maze of people and stores,
there were decoration and music and distractions galore!
Most dogs pranced along without worry or fear,
but some balked at the man on the sleigh and those fake looking deer.
The cat was almost asleep too when he first heard the sound,
a whoosh through the air and a jingle around.
It reminded him of a dog's collar when the animal shook,
but this sound kept on growing. He'd better go look.
From the ceiling there came a faint sort of thunk,
as the kennel cat climbed to the highest pile of junk.
Once before people had worked on the roof,
and come down through the trap door to a chorus of "Woooof!"
But the dogs still were quiet, all sleeping so sound,
as this man dressed in red made his way right on down.
He patted the cat as he climbed past his spot,
then made his way right to the trainers' coffee pot.
A shepherd sat up, not fully awake,then a Golden followed her with a mighty loud shake.
That did it! All the dogs sprang to life with loud noise.
In spite of the din, the old man kept his poise.
He filled the pot full and it started to brew,
then he pulled up a chair and took in the view.
Dogs all around him, so carefully bred,
he knew well their jobs, the blind people they led.
Some had stopped barking and looked at him now,
while others delighted in their own deafening howl.
Laying a finger in front of his lips,
the jolly old man silenced the excitable yips."You all may not know me, but I'm Santa Claus,"
the old man smiled and took a short pause,
While he filled up his mug with hot liquid and cream,
"I've always wanted to stop here. It's been one of my dreams."
The cat had climbed down and was exploring Santa's sack.
"Yes, little kitty, that's an empty pack."
Santa smiled as he drank and looked at those eyes,
deep brown ones and gold ones held wide in surprise.
Some of these dogs, he'd seen just last year,
in their puppy homes, cute and full of holiday cheer.
He'd seen the effects of a pup on the tree,
but now they were here at the school, just waiting to be.
"I didn't bring you presents or bones just to chew.
I'll tell you something better, what you are going to do."
"You all will work hard and the trainers will share,
both praise and correction, gentle and fair."
"You'll go lots of places and face big scary things.
You'll ride buses and subways and hear fire sirens ring."
"Cars will drive at you but you will stand strong,
not moving into danger, not moving toward wrong."
"And then just when you thinkthat this trainer's the best,
the kindest, and funniest person, toss away all the rest,"
"That trainer will begin to ignore you and give you away,handing your leash over despite your dismay."
"Now the person who pets you and feeds you will be
a blind person. That's a person who can't see."
"This man or this woman may see just a tad,
but their view's missing parts or the focus is bad."
"So you, well trained dogs, will act as their eyes.
You will work as a team and discover the size"
"Of this great world we live in, because you will go
a million new places with this person, you know."
Santa sipped at his coffee and looked over the brood,
knowing what he had to say next might sound kind of rude.
"Not all of you will make it and become canine guides.
Your time here isn't wasted though. You won't be cast aside.""Some of you will be drug dogs and some will find bombs.
Some will become pets in a home with a dad and a mom."
"All these things are important. People wait on long lists,
to receive such gooddogs as you, the school folks insist."
The last drop of coffee had gone into his cup
as Santa turned, smiling at each wide eyed pup.
"The best gift of all is to give something back.
That's why there's nothing for you all inside of my pack."
Draining his mug, Santa went to each pen,
and petted and scratched each dog again and again.
"Now next year and many more years after that,
you all will give gifts wherever you're at."
"You might lick a hand that's had a bad day,
Or notice a car and step out of the way."
"You might help catch a crook or discover some loot,
Or just bring some joy to a tired old man in a funny red suit."
"Your master will love you and treat you with care.
In return, your training and trust will always be there."
After the last dog had been petted and soothed,
Santa put away the coffee pot and made ready to move.
Up the ladder he rose to the door high above,
with a smile and a wave as he slipped on his gloves.
And all the dog ears were pricked as he disappeared out of sight.
"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night!"

I Protest, I Strike, I Quit!!!

Sunday at 6:00am:
Nikki gets up! Oh My! Can I eat this early like school days?
No... she goes to the bathroom, checks her email, replies to her friends, and goes back to bed without even acknowledging me.

7:30am:
She gets up, looks at the clock, and... flops back to bed...

8:30am:
She gets her butt up FINALLY! Takes her time and reaches for her seasonal Santa cup; pours fresh coffee and enjoys a few sips... Then finally, I hear kibbles hitting the bottom of my stainless food bowl! IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!

I've given up the 6:30am breakfast & 4:30pm dinner long time ago. However, fellow Guide Dogs & Puppies in Training, can we let our humans get away with this kind of nonsense??? I determine to protest! But as soon as that food bowl shows up, I start wagging & happy-dancing like I'm the happiest lab on earth! I wish I could make my point by hunger strike like my blogging buddy, Irish, but hi's Golden! Even my psycho bro Banzai pulls off hunger strike... Oh, it's the fate of lab, forever doomed by our love of food & royalty to humans...

Sunny sky's back, and we're happily back in business as usual.

Here is something very interesting that happened on the bus yesterday.

Person A: "Wow! You have a certified guide dog! That's cool! Are you bli..."
Person B: [interrupting] "What is a guide dog? ... Oh, a guard dog..."
Person A: "No no, a guide dog for the blind! He helps you a lot, right?"
Nikki: "Yes, she helps me get around."
Person B: "Oh, I see, a guide dog! That's neat! So, the dog knows all the good restaurants & sites!"

She thought I was a tour guide dog??? Nikki & the Person A were scratching there heads... Thank God it was time to get off and go on our merry way!

Oh Help Me Lord!!!

Lord, why the weatherman has to be right? What have I done to make you so mad that you put our San Diego Sun away? Would the sky stop crying if I share my favorite toy???

We were greeted by the sad sky and lots of teardrops this morning when we went out for my potty walk. There were micro rivers everywhere, and I tried to guide Nikki around them as much as I could. But it was impossible to avoid them all! Nikki squirmed every time when she stepped into puddles! STOP WHINING!!!

Nikki decided that my wearing booties and rain coat was essential for my well-being during the rainy commute! WRONG! What does she know about mighty lab, the water dog??? PLUS, we've never had a success with those stupid booties! I do fine without them, and even Keith said not to worry too much! But when your human is so determined, what a lob to do??? I let her have her way...

Needless to mention, I had a terrible time walking in those stupid things on my paws! They kept loosening. Nikki thinks it's because I walk with super high steps, which I disagree! We managed to keep all 4 booties on as far as Old Town Transit Center. On the bus, people said that I looked cute but pathetic! YES, they were 100% right; I was feeling miserable with rain & booties... I don't mind rain coat.

Then I reveled! Oh no! Not an angel dog like ME! I didn't do anything intentionally to revel! But the booties came off one by one while we were walking to the trolley! Nikki didn't realized it, and nice people were trying to get her attention. I noticed it right away and tried to stop. But Nikki gave me a big leash cue with a rushing "hop up!" So we kept going. I thought losing booties might not be a bad idea for my sake! However it didn't happen; people gathered up all 4 and caught up with us... Nikki didn't tried to put them on again though. We were in time for the trolley and got on safely.

When we got off, I led Nikki close to the building edges so we wouldn't get wet so much. You see how nice and smart I am!?!? She didn't get what I was doing at first though... It's hard to partner with a slow-thinking human...

In spite of my best efforts, we were both soaked by the time we got to the office. We should have kept a blow drier here!!! Nikki dried me with a hand towel so I didn't catch a cold. After a last chunk of baby carrot, (btw, Nikki was coaxing me with carrot bits to wear booties!) I snuggled on my fleece rug. Arrr coziness finally.....

Now it's time to go home. According to the Internet, it's not raining. YAY!!!

Sunny Paradise to Whole lots of Wetness!!! & More Wetness to Come?!?!?

Hello from Soggy San Diego!!!

Last week, Banzai & I were in the sunny doggie paradise at Grandma Sue's house. Grandpa John calls me "My Girl," and we played and played all day! Grandma Sue takes rowdyBanzai graciously, and she loves him!!! After the 3rd day or so, we thought this fun would never end, and it seemed like it until the phone rang on Saturday evening...

Sunday, Sue & John loaded us and our stuff in the car, and we were back home in 15 minutes! Don't tell that old lady, but I was kind of happy to see Nikki again! So I did some pappy dance for her. And what I get in return??? WORK... As soon as Sue & John left, the harness was on my back, and we went to Subway to pick up lunch for humans... Where's my treat??? A couple of kibbles don't count after the 5-star treatment we were getting! Anyway, Nikki slowly brought me back to the reality of guide work. As good as I am, I got in the rhythm after a few miner hiccups. It was nice of her to start with an easy rout to Subway. Well, thought I was done after that! We did have some play time & such. But in the evening, the harness showed up again, and we were off to a long list of grocery shopping! What was worse, we had to make 2 trips to the same store because Nikki was airheaded and left her money at home... You know how I hate repeating!!!

We woke up yesterday with a sound of rain! God, do we really have to go to work??? Unfortunately YES... I wore the rubber-ducky rain coat from Pet Smart; yes, it looks cute on me, but it doesn't do the job very well... By the time we got to the office, I was soaked and stinky according to my mean lady! I didn't wear booties though; I hate those things, and whenever I wear them, one of them comes off while walking...

It was raining all day yesterday. We went out for potty/post office run around lunch time, and got wet! Business in the rain isn't too bad. I kind of like to take my time and sniff the flesh grass, but Nikki tells me to hurry up! On the way home, I had to work extra hard in the rainy evening. San Diegans don't know how to drive in the rain!!! I had to dodge people, back up from a car, and zigzag among shopping carts, bikes, and other stuff on the sidewalk... Isn't it too much for my full work day after a week-long vacation???

Today the rain is taking a break now, but it's supposed to come back tonight! Hope it waits till we get home.

Fabulous B-Day Cruise

This is Nikki, Coral's human. Since Coral is still having a grand time at her Grandma Sue's, I'm going to invade her blog and tell you guys about my wonderful week!

So, dogs got picked up last Sunday afternoon for their week-long vacation. Thanks a million to Sue & John for taking care of them!!! Then we did some packing for the week throughout the night and took care of some things around the house.

We got on the ship around 3:30pm on Monday (My actual birthday) , the 8th! I never thought that we'd be on a cruise twice this year!!! The Carnival ship was a lot smaller than Holland America, and our cabin was small too. We tried to switch to an accessible room, but everything was sold out! No complaints here! I was so happy to be on vacation:) I missed having Coral for the first couple of days especially. But I managed to do OK with my white cane even though I kept passing my room despite a big "Happy 40th Birthday" sign on the door! Usually I rely on Coral to remember places after the first visit, and she's proven to be very good! Without her, I kept getting lost on the ship... The crew got to know me well though!

This time, we tried to relax as much as being adventurous because of Greg's new health conditions. So rest of Monday and Tuesday while at sea, we explored the boat, hanged out on the deck, and took it easy for Cabo on Wednesday. Needless to say, the food was good. I ate twice as much at every meal!!! So I had to go work out at the jim for the next feast! I wanted to feel extra princessy and try some spa, but it was way over my price range... We were going swimming, but it was a little cold and the pool area was always crowded!

Wednesday, we enjoyed Cabo San Lucas. on the shore, there were many venders waiting for us and tried to lure into their shops or tours. We ran into this guy who promised us a good deal on parasailing!!! Wow! I've been wanting to do that!!! But we decided to go eat first. Then another guy offered us a boat tour that would drop us at the area with restaurants and shops. So we took the deal. The guide spoke just a little English. But most people including Greg spoke or understood Spanish well enough except for me!!! The scenery was very beautiful! Though I couldn't see well, Greg described everything, and I felt the big waves & heard fish splashing the water! I'm looking forward to digital photos on my computer at home. The boat ended up going back to where we started because the downtown dock was full! So we took a bike cab to the shopping area, which was fun. After yummy lunch at a local cantina and some shopping and walking around, it was already time to go back to the ship! We didn't have enough time for parasailing... Well, more reason to come back! We were having so much fun that we almost missed the last shuttle boat to the ship!!!

Thursday was another relaxing day at sea, and we got to Ensenada on Friday. We went to the big blowhall where the tide shoots up water as high as 100 feet!!! It was pretty cool! I'll post a picture some time soon.

Saturday was the end of our cruise!!! The time just flew away quickly!!! The ship docked in San Diego by 7:30am, and we were home by 10:30am! I wish the vacation was longer, but I know I'd say the same thing after 10-day cruise!!! I should get a job on a cruise ship!

Well, now it's time to go back to work and earn money for the next vacation!

Happy B-Day to Nikki! Darn, she's OLD isn't she!!!

Saturday's a bit early b-day party was a lot of fun! I got to see my guide dog friends, duchess and Fiera.

Talk about spoiled princess, Nikki has been exactly the one this weekend and most likely the whole next week!!! There was a beautiful cake made by a French Chef; she was showered with lots of cards & gifts at the party. And the ultimate surprise is the Mexico cruise from Greg!!! He had arranged everything such as asking Nikki's boss for a week off!!! What a sweet hubby!!! They are leaving today!!!

Remember that I said that I'd go to Grandma Sue's house next time??? That's what happened. Greg arranged so that Banzai and I could have fun for a week with Sue & John! No work for a whole week:) YAY!!!

Good Christmas Story

From the Inside Out
A TOUCHING TALE

It was just after Thanksgiving. An angry middle-aged man stood at the counter of the animal shelter, gripping the leash of an aging German shepherd. "Why won't you take him?" he shouted. "I need to get him off my hands!"

The adoption counselor tried once more to explain. "At fourteen, Samson is too old to be a good adoption candidate," she said.
"Well, then just take him and put him down," the man yelled. "I want to be rid of him."
"We don't take animals just to put them down,"
the counselor explained. "May I ask why you no longer wish to keep the
dog?"
"I just can't stand the sight of him," the man hissed, "and if you won't put him down, I'll shoot him myself."

Trying not to show her horror, the counselor pointed out that shooting an animal was illegal.
She urged the man to consult with his veterinarian for other options. "I'm not spending any more money on this animal," the man grumbled and, yanking the leash, he stalked out.
Concerned, the counselor wrote down the license plate of the man's truck and offered up a quick prayer for Samson.

A few days later, a German shepherd was found abandoned. He was brought to the shelter, and the staff recognized him as Samson. The town where he had been abandoned was where his owner lived. The man was contacted by the police and, under questioning, admitted that distraught over his recent divorce, he had sought revenge through the shepherd. He hadn't even wanted the dog, but he fought to keep him to spite his wife. Once his wife was gone, he couldn't bear to see the animal. The man was charged with abandonment, and Samson came to stay at the shelter.

The wife and the couple's son were located in Pennsylvania. They were horrified to hear what had happened to their dog and agreed immediately to have him come live with them.

There was just one problem: The wife was nearly broke after the divorce and their initial move.
She could take no time off from work to drive to New Hampshire and get the dog, and she couldn't afford any other method of getting him to her. She hated to have Samson in the shelter any longer but didn't know what to do.

"We'll come up with something," the staff assured her, but in their hearts they didn't know what. They were concerned, as well. Samson had lived with his family all his life. Within a few weeks, his whole world had been turned upside down. He was beginning to mope, and the staff could tell by his eyes that if he wasn't back with his family soon, he would give up.

Christmas was only two weeks away when the angel arrived. He came by pickup truck in the form of a man in his mid-thirties. Through a friend of a shelter staffer, he had heard about Samson's plight. He was willing to drive Samson to Pennsylvania, and he would do it before Christmas.

The staff was thrilled with the offer, but cautious. Why would a stranger drive hundreds of miles out of his way to deliver a dog to people he didn't know? They had to make sure he was legitimate and that Samson wouldn't be sold to meat dealers or dumped along the interstate.
The man understood their concerns and, thankfully, checked out to be an upstanding citizen. In the course of the conversation, he explained why he had come forward.

"Last year, I left my dog in my van while I went to do some grocery shopping," he explained.
"While I was inside, the van caught fire. I heard people hollering and rushed out to see my van engulfed in flames. My dog meant everything to me, and he was trapped. I tried to get to the van, but people restrained me.

"Then I heard someone shouting, 'The dog is safe! The dog is safe!' I looked over, and there was this man I'd never seen before, holding my dog. He had risked his own life to get my dog out. I'll forever be in his debt.

"Just when you don't think there are heroes any more, one comes along.
I vowed then and there that if I ever had the chance to do someone a good turn when it came to a beloved pet, that I would. When I heard about Samson and his family, I knew this was my chance, so here I am."

The shelter staff was amazed. They all knew about the van rescue story.
It had been in all the papers, and the shelter had even given the rescuer a reward, but they had never dreamed that Samson's angel was connected to this earlier good deed.

A few days later, Samson and his angel were on their way. The dog seemed to know he was going home, because his ears perked up and his eyes were brighter than they had been in some time.

Just before Christmas, the mail brought one of the best cards the shelter had ever received.
Along with a thank-you note were photos of a deliriously happy Samson romping with his family in the snow and snuggling with them by their Christmas tree. Samson was truly where he belonged, and the staff knew he would live out his days happily there.

They also knew that Samson's journey home was a true miracle to be thankful for, and that angels — and heroes— may still appear when you need them, even in the most unlikely forms.

Happy Friday to You All!!!

Yay!!! It's finally Friday! Seems like there were 70,000 days in this week... OK, that's too exaggerating! But it was such a long, boring work week for me!
After the holiday weekend, Nikki had a lot to catch up PLUS a few new projects!!! So she was busy the whole week and didn't have time to play with me much. Good thing that Jake came to the office and kept me company. But at one point, I was so bored that I started chasing my tale!!! Well, everyone in the office laughed... They needed a good laugh for stress reliever! I did a big favor for them!

This weekend should be fun. Nikki's birthday is this coming Monday, and she's turning ... OOPS! ... Just got a dirty look! I'm not supposed to make a public announcement! But ya all know she's a mean old lady... Anyway, Greg is throwing a b-day party for her tomorrow. So I'll post about it if there is anything worthy doing so.

Gotta sign off; time to start bugging Nikki to go home!

Rest of the Turkey Day Weekend

Friday was uneventful. Although we talked about hitting the mall with the rest of the world, nobody got up early; I think everyone was in food coma! However, as soon as they got up, one by one, they proceeded to the fridge and filled up their plate with leftovers! What a pig!!!

In the afternoon, Nikki decided to browse around the neighborhood to walk off the food! It was very different from the city environment I'm used to. We walked along the sidewalkless streets, and I swear that every house has a big barking dog!!! They barked their heads off at us! I was almost running because I wanted to get away from them before getting in trouble. We finally found a big street with a sidewalk, and a bus stop too! Later, Selena told us that would be the bus stop to catch a bus to Riverside and malls. YAY!!! Maybe we will be braver next time and go to the mall; better yet, we will meet up with Frank and Mayumi! Nikki has been visiting Greg's family since 2001, but never knew where the bus stop was! Before getting a guide dog, family didn't let her venture out on her own; Nikki didn't feel safe in this unfamiliar area either. Wow! I'm that trustworthy!!!

Saturday, we went to Temecula for Dad's Popwarner football game. It was a big place with baseball, succor, and football fields. Maybe Karli played succor here last May.

Mom & Dad gave us a ride to San Diego after the game. When we got home, I was ready for a nap after such an eventful week!
So, where was Banzai all this time? He visited his Grandma Sue for Thanksgiving! He said that he even had a piece of turkey with veggies! How nice! I'll go with him next time!!!

While people were busy preparing for the Thanksgiving feast, I was feeling sort of left out. But the festivity was for me as well! Joseph & JJ brought their dog, Dallas to play with me:)

Dallas is a little bigger than Banzai. Her body is one color and the head another. So she looks like wearing a sweater! Stylish huh! She is as energetic as Banzai, but doesn't bark like him. Greg's parents have a huge fenced backyard. After we got to know each other in the front yard, we went to the backyard so Dallas could be off leash. We ran around played hard like mad dogs! We had a blast chasing each other!!! Well, most of the time, I instigated Dallas to chase me. It was a great fun. I need playtime like this more often to let out my energy.

My Thanksgiving

Wednesday afternoon, we left the office early and went to Greg's family for Thanksgiving.

When we got there, lots of things were in the works; cooking, cleaning, etc, etc... I offered to help vacuuming, but immediately turned down. How mean! They don't know how a lab can vacuume way better than a noisy machine! So I tried to be helpful and went to the kitchen! Hmm, ... smelt so yummy!!! Taste-testing would be the job made for me!!! However, humans didn't seem to understand... Finally I was put away in the corner on tiedown... Come on! I was trying to be a productive member of the family...

Late Wed evening, humans finally decided to settle down in the family room and played with me! I greeted with every one of them with my rope toy and won the tag of war, except for Jermy! He was very big & strong!!!

Thursday, the Turkey Day, Dad was hustling & bustling in the kitchen! The house was filled with yummy aroma. I wish I had read caper tips from Zane sooner! Don't worry fellow doggies; I'll share the tips at the end of this post. So, STAY TUNED!!! Nikki skipped breakfast and lunch for this feast because she wanted to taste all the goodies! And she absolutely did! She's not usually a big eater, but on Thanksgiving Day, she finished a huge plate without leaving a bite for me!!! How mean!!! While they consumed huge amount of yumminess like turkey, stuffing, candied yam, homemade mac&cheese, greens, pecan & sweet potato pies, & much much more, I didn't even bother them one bit! I deserve more than a couple of kibble bits...

Well, as promised, here are the caper tips from my Prince Zane. We've got a whole year to practice till the next Turkey Day!

Getting extra food is always a challenge. Where did our masters ever get the idea that we can survive on just a cup or two of dry dog food a day? Have you ever met a lab who could fill up on such a small amount of food? (NOT). So here are a few suggestions for pulling off what I call "capers".
First, establish a state of total trust between you and your master. That's the hard part with labs as we somehow have a reputation of getting into trouble. But if you cuddle them and let them pet you and let them rub you between the toes and behind the ears, then you can indeed get their trust, it's just a matter of time. It really helps to exhibit perfect behavior for a few days before the caper is planned. That's hard to do but possible. Believe me, they will soon begin trusting you... humans can't help it. I've successfully pulled of the famous cantalope caper and tuna fish casserole capers.... no problem. As for implementing the caper, well my recommendation is to wait till the room is empty, or until the master(s) are distracted or asleep, so they don't notice what you're doing. Don't forget the children in the house, they can snitch on you if they see what you're doing. Don't waste your effort on a small caper because if you're busted then you're in big trouble anyway. I always wait till a big opportunity presents itself, then I make my move. With Thanksgiving food being prepared tomorrow, I've already made my plans for tomorrows caper. You see, tonite they came home with two (yes TWO) pies tonite and I think they need "taste testing". Even if you're caught, they can only stay mad for a little while....once they see your big brown eyes and your tail between your legs, they usually forgive you and the shock and awe they exhibited at what you did will fade quickly.Being a lab is sure great. I could never get away with these capers if I were a cat or bird. They're just not smart enough. I hope this helps you and my other canine followers who might read this. Nikki spent last Thanksgiving with a group of nice people & their brand new guides at GDB.

Actually Thanksgiving Day was her very first Dog Day, the day Nikki was introduced to Shelby.

Though they didn't come home as a working team, Shelby was the one who put up with Nikki when she knew nothing about handling a guide dog! She was the one who made such a strong impression of traveling with a guide dog vs. white cane! Shelby, I give it to you! Nikki still thinks highly of you! It might have been different if you were in top shape health wise... But things happen for a reason, and I'm sure you're ready to enjoy your Turkey Day with your family! Hey, you may actually get to have a piece!

They are talking about a Class 680 reunion! I hope it happens. I'd love to see people & dogs that Nikki always talks about.

Well, I don't want to reveal my past and ruin my reputation... But I told you before that I just can't help checking out other dogs on the street! Seems like it's our litter trait; a little birdie told me that my brother has the same issue out there! Below is what Nikki wrote to her friend about my dog distraction incident...

We are a new team (about 10 months) and Coral's biggest issue happens to be dog distraction, and my lack of assertiveness made things worse than it should be at the beginning. However, it's getting better these days. I think the turning point was about 5 months ago. It was a very scary incident for me though; we were walking along and stopped at the curb. For some reason, Coral was very anxious to go. When the light changed, I gave her the "forward" command, and we were almost dashing into the street! I was pulling the harness and telling her steady without knowing what to expect! I also felt vearing to the left. Then I heard a small dog barking on our left & behind me! Someone with a dog was coming towards up and passed us on the left side. When we finally got to the curb safely, Coral was still focusing on the dog now on the other side of the street! I corrected her as hard as I could, and had her do puppy push-ups and whole obedience sequence. I was mad & scared at the same time! I didn't call GDB that day since it was in the evening, but I was going to if that happened again. However, since that incident, things have been much better. Maybe the correction finally sank in?

Yeah... I rmember that... I kind of went nuts, and I do understand that it was a wrong thing to do. It was very embarrassing that I had to do puppy pushups and obedience on the street while everyone was watching with "what's wrong with that dog?" expression! So now, I'm doing my best to ignore other dogs when in harness.

Good morning!

Finally the heat wave is calming down, and the LA fires are being contained. All my friends in the area, Zane & the family, Amy & Binny, etc, etc, are all fine! Thank God!!! And GDA is OK too. Now let's hope the weather will cooperate with us to feel like fall & holiday season!

Happy Monday to Everyone!

The weather has been crazily weird in So-Cal! We thought it was going to be all cool for the holidays and start decorating the house for Christmas... But instead, we may have to think about having a 4th of July BBQ or something!!!

This weekend was soooo hot! And the fires are burning everywhere in LA area... I hear many homes have been lost, and the dogs at GDA had to be evacuated! Their campus is in danger...

San Diego is not foreign to fires either; we were hit hard last year and 2003, and with this weather, anything can happen! Thoughts are with everyone who is in the fire area and the firefighters who are doing their best.

Last Tuesday morning, I was all ready to report to my duty. However, Nikki slept in and wasn't in a hurry at all! Oops! was she fired??? No, it was Veterans Day, and many people were off. Before going forward, thanks a million to all veterans and military people for protecting our freedom! I'm not for the ongoing wars, but I do respect those who believe in and serve the country!

Anyway, Nikki and Thuy decided to take advantage of the beautiful day off and get together for lunch. At first the plan was to go to their favorite tea house. That meant all work for me:> But a sudden change of plan made me smile big time! We went by the water on Shelter Island! And the best thing; Thuy brought her doggie, Brownie!!! After they ate some takeout lunch in the car, we walked along the water in a nice breeze. Since it wasn't so crowded, Nikki decided to take my harness off and give me a break! YAY!!! I was still on a long leash, but could walk on the grass and sniff and play with Brownie all I wanted! Brownie was so quiet and cute; not like someone I know... Hah Banzai!?!? The only thing I couldn't do was to run after other dogs and say hi! But it was so nice to just be a dog outside our backyard. Banzai couldn't come because Nikki wouldn't be able to handle 2 dogs. Plus, he can't really walk nicely on a leash! See Bro! Gotta learn to behave!!! I let you be the boss at home, but you're missing out!!! Ha Ha...
